Derech<\/em>\u00a0Hashem<\/em>\u00a0– The Way of G-d 2:4:7<\/p>\n

Their righteous earn a place in the world to come, too\u00a01<\/sup>.\u00a0But their experience there would be unlike our own\u00a02<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll serve a supplementary and subservient role there, though, like clothing to a body\u00a03<\/sup>. As that is all they could ever hope for, given the phenomena we\u2019d cited above\u00a04<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

A \u201crighteous gentile\u201d is defined classically as a non-Jew who accepts the seven Noachite Mitzvahs (see 2:4:6) with certain conditions (see\u00a0Hilchot<\/em>\u00a0Malchim<\/em>\u00a08:11). In any event, this underscores the idea that an individual\u00a0can\u00a0be judged for his own actions, rather than one of a multitude of descendants of a particular \u201cbranch\u201d.<\/p>\n

2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>Thanks to the merits of our ancestors and to the eternal covenant that G-d and we entered into. 3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>This arresting image can either be off-putting (a piece of clothing rather a full human being) or perhaps even flattering (along the lines of \u201cclothing makes the man\u201d), but Ramchal has a wholly unexpected take on it in Adir<\/em> Bamarom<\/em>. He speaks there (p. 609) of humankind having been born with souls and clothing<\/em> at first, and that the latter had to be removed once Adam and Eve sinned and to be \u201cconverted\u201d (i.e., returned to their native purity by becoming a part of the Jewish Nation), which would ultimately happen (see p. 353 there) and be the ultimate act of rectification.<\/p>\n

4\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>That is, given our people\u2019s role in the wake of Adam and Eve\u2019s sin and in the course of G-d\u2019s intentions for humanity.<\/p>\n
