{"id":1112,"date":"2012-02-16T11:36:07","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T16:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ramchal.wordpress.com\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2012-02-16T11:36:07","modified_gmt":"2012-02-16T16:36:07","slug":"the-other-excursion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rabbiyaakovfeldman.aishdas.org\/ramchal\/2012\/02\/16\/the-other-excursion\/","title":{"rendered":"The Other Excursion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ramchal takes another short excursion, this time in his comments to Petach 33, and offers this definition of and the difference between <em>Chochma<\/em> and <em>Binah<\/em> which are both elements of the thinking process (as well as elemental components of creation and reality, of course).<\/p>\n<p>The term <em>Chochma<\/em> (literally, \u201cwisdom\u201d), he explains, represents \u201chow things are arranged in the depth of the mind\u201d and it\u2019s in its nature \u201cto be hidden and concealed\u201d. The <em>Binah<\/em> aspect of the mind (literally, \u201cunderstanding\u201d), he says, \u201creveals the hidden mysteries of <em>Chochma<\/em>\u201d. That\u2019s to say that <em>Chochma<\/em> represents the deep and passive unconscious, while <em>Binah<\/em> represents the rational and actively conscious mind. Others have spoken in like terms while yet others have presented them otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>See Zohar 3, p. 235b and elsewhere where <em>Chochma<\/em> is broken down into two terms: <em>Koch Ma<\/em>, meaning, \u201cthe potentiality of whatever (exists)\u201d, including one\u2019s thoughts, suggesting that it\u2019s in fact one\u2019s latent, unconscious thoughts. For <em>Binah<\/em> see <em>Chagiga<\/em> 14a which speaks of it as granting one the ability to \u201cunderstand one thing from another\u201d &#8212; to consciously expand upon the initial intuitive notion and follow its course.
