Let\u2019s explain the place of \u201ccircles\u201d and \u201cstraight lines\u201d in God\u2019s governance as cited in Petachim<\/em> 9 and (most especially) 13. In order to do that we\u2019d also need to explain Chessed<\/em> (Kindness), Din<\/em> (Judgment) or Rachamim<\/em> (Mercy); \u201cpiercing\u201d, and \u201cascending\u201d or \u201cdescending\u201d; linear and non-linear Divine Providence; and causality as opposed to non-causality. But let\u2019s first quote the pertinent statement in Petach<\/em> 13.<\/p>\n

A<\/strong> (vision of a) \u201ccircle\u201d refers to a circular <\/strong>(i.e., non-linear) mode of governance without differentiation as to Chessed<\/em> <\/strong>(Kindness), Din<\/em> <\/strong>(Judgment) or Rachamim<\/em> <\/strong>(Mercy), but rather as <\/strong>(i.e., it\u2019s an expression of) overall providence \u2026. It is <\/strong>(a depiction of) the mystical notion of <\/strong>(linear) causality. The<\/strong> (vision of a) \u201cstraight line\u201d on the other hand indicates a detailed mode of governance that is<\/em> based on<\/strong> Chessed<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>(Kindness), Din<\/em> <\/strong>(Judgment) and Rachamim<\/em> <\/strong>(Mercy, which are themselves laid out as) right, left or center<\/strong> (poles).<\/p>\n

All of this refers to Ari\u2019s depiction of how the Sephirot<\/em> came about, and how they interact with each other in order to govern the universe according to God\u2019s will, as we\u2019ll explain.<\/p>\n
