Commentators to Derech Hashem: R’ Aryeh Kaplan

We’re going to provide a list of the contemporary commentators from whose works we’ll be culling, and the first is my later teacher, R’ Aryeh Kaplan z”l.

Most people interested in Derech Hashem are familiar with R’ Kaplan’s translation of it which was published by Feldheim Publishes in 1977. While he didn’t write a commentary to it per se, R’ Kaplan provided classical sources to many of Ramchal’s statements. He said there that he’d provide a more extensive listing of sources in the future, but he didn’t, sadly.

Prologue and Part One of Ramchal’s Introduction

This will be a setting out of the whole of דרך הי in readable terms with scholarly notes, though it will not offer a word for word translation.

The series will run concurrently on www.torah.org, but we’ll add comments and other remarks here from time to time.

The prologue can be found here, and the first part of Ramchal’s Introduction can be found here.

(I’d add a couple of other sources to note 2 in the Introduction: Ma’amar HaVivuach Bein Chokeir U’Mekubal [in Sha’arei Ramchal p. 76], and Derech Tevunah p. 183).
